Where to Find SillyTavern / Tavern Character Cards
(Free Libraries)

You already know a Tavern character card is a file. The missing piece is usually the boring one: where do people actually download them, and how do you tell a useful card from a junk PNG?

We build AIME and the AIME Character Atlas. This page is a discovery guide, not a ranked “best NSFW sites” list and not a soft catalog pitch. It covers how to choose a free / public source, what to check before you download, and what to do after you have a card — including bringing it into AIME on your phone via our published import path.

Other blogs also cover “where to find cards.” We checked two of them on 2026-10-25 (Asia/Shanghai) for structure only: a ThotChat roundup that leans hard into adult-oriented card hubs, and a TavernSprite free-sources guide that stops at desktop SillyTavern. We do not copy their size claims, search-volume numbers, or product CTAs. If product or third-party pages change later, trust the live site over this article.

30-second: what a character card is

A Tavern Character Card is a portable character-definition file used across many roleplay tools. The common form is a PNG portrait with character data embedded inside it (often described as chara / ccv3 metadata) — not just an avatar image. Some workflows also use JSON or other formats; for AIME’s Card studio today, plan on a Tavern PNG.

SillyTavern is a popular local front-end people use to chat with models and to export those cards. V2 and V3 are card-format versions. You do not need the full spec to browse libraries: export or download a compatible card, then load it in a front-end that understands it.

Important: a card is not a chat. The file holds name, personality, scenario, first message, and related fields. You still need somewhere to run it — SillyTavern on a computer, a hosted chat site that accepts cards, or a mobile app with an import path such as AIME.

How to choose a source (before the list)

A short checklist beats a longer bookmark folder.

Free vs paywalled downloads

Community-shared Tavern cards are usually free to download. Some sites ask for a free account first; that is normal. If a page demands payment, “unlock software,” or a random installer just to get a community card file, treat that as a red flag and leave. This page does not name unverified scam domains.

Age filters and content rules

Large open libraries mix tones and tags. Set age / content filters when the site offers them, read the site’s rules, and only download what you are allowed to use. AIME is framed for store-safe, 13+ positioning on our side; this guide names known public card sources as facts, not as an adult-content shopping list.

Preview the first message when the site shows it

If a listing shows a description and first message, read them. A first message that already sounds like a character is a better signal than a shiny title alone. A two-line generic opener often means a shallow card.

Rights: only download and share what you may use

Download or import cards you created, or cards the creator clearly allows you to reuse. Do not treat unauthorized real-person likenesses or uncleared IP dumps as “free for everyone.” Follow each site’s rules and the law where you live.

Places people commonly find Tavern / SillyTavern cards

These are common public starting points, checked at a high level on 2026-10-25. Features can change; treat each site’s current UI as source of truth. We are not inventing library sizes — only qualitative notes.

Chub.ai is one of the community’s default places to search public character cards by name or tag. Some people also use Chub’s own chat surface; you do not have to. Good if you want a big, tag-filterable pool and are willing to sift. Watch-outs: quality varies a lot; turn filters on before you browse; do not trust “biggest in the world” marketing elsewhere — we are not repeating unverified counts here.

Reddit r/SillyTavernAI: niche and creator-shared cards

The subreddit r/SillyTavernAI regularly hosts threads where people ask where cards live and share originals or ports. Look for Character-related flair or posts when the community uses them. Good if you want creator notes, niche concepts, or discussion of how a card was written. Watch-outs: Reddit is not an official download site; post quality is uneven; always open the linked file from a source you trust, and respect the poster’s license notes.

Janitor AI: big catalog — export depends on creator settings

Janitor AI is a large character / story catalog people browse and chat with in-browser. Some creators make definitions easier to take elsewhere; others keep bots chat-only. Good if you already use Janitor and find a character you like. Watch-outs: do not assume every bot exports as a downloadable Tavern PNG. Treat export as “depends on the creator and what the site allows that day.” We are not recommending third-party archives that scrape or bypass site terms.

GitHub: maintained packs with version history (check licenses)

Some creators host card packs in public GitHub repositories (search for SillyTavern / Tavern character card collections). Good if you want version history, clear folders, and a maintainer who updates cards over time. Watch-outs: browsing is worse than a dedicated hub; always read the repo license and skip packs that look like mass unauthorized IP dumps.

AIME Character Atlas: browse public cards + import your own for mobile (our product)

Character Atlas is our discovery / import / publish surface for Tavern Character Cards (V2/V3). You can browse public cards ranked by use in AIME, and creators can publish into the public catalog. On 2026-10-25 (Asia/Shanghai) the Atlas home copy still read “149 characters.” That is a small public library on purpose — do not compare it to huge web hubs. Atlas is most useful when you want a phone-friendly path: import a PNG you already have, keep it private or publish later, and continue in the AIME app.

For the exact import clicks, use our published guide: How to Import a SillyTavern / Tavern Character Card into AIME. Card studio lives at characters.365aime.com/studio; on the check date for that guide, the importer accepted PNG with embedded chara / ccv3 metadata and required an AIME sign-in.

What to check before you download

Use this pass on any source above:

  1. Creator notes and tags — what the character is for, tone, and any “optimized for X model” notes.
  2. First message preview — if shown, does it already write like a person with a point of view?
  3. File type you need next — if your next stop is AIME, prefer a Tavern PNG with readable embedded metadata (see the import guide). Portrait-only images or metadata stripped by chat apps will fail parse.
  4. No mystery unlockers — cards are data files; you should not need a shady desktop “unlocker” to open one.
  5. Rights again — if you plan to re-publish on Atlas or elsewhere, only do that when you have the right.

Download counts and star ratings (when a site shows them) are weak signals at best. Prefer reading the card fields over chasing vanity metrics.

After you have a card — three paths

Keep using SillyTavern on desktop

If you already run SillyTavern, import the card with its current character panel / import control and follow SillyTavern’s own docs for your version. We do not maintain SillyTavern and will not invent button names for their UI.

Import into AIME Character Atlas

Open Card studio, drop the Tavern PNG, set visibility (Private / Link only / Public), then Parse & import. Full steps, failure messages, and honest boundaries are in: Import SillyTavern / Tavern cards into AIME. After import, sign into the same AIME account on iPhone or Android to keep chatting.

Phone without a PC

You do not need a desktop SillyTavern install just to use a card on a phone if you have an app path that accepts Tavern PNGs. For AIME, that path is: get the PNG → import in Atlas (browser) → continue in the AIME app. For mobile options, see SillyTavern Character Cards on iPhone & Android; use the import guide for the concrete AIME how-to.

FAQ

Where can I download SillyTavern character cards for free?
Start with well-known public libraries and communities such as Chub.ai, r/SillyTavernAI, and (when creators allow export) Janitor AI, plus maintainer packs on GitHub. Community cards are usually free; account walls happen, payment walls for ordinary community cards are a warning sign.

What’s the best site for character cards?
There is no universal “best.” Prefer Chub-style hubs when you want tag depth and volume; Reddit when you want niche creator shares; GitHub when you want versioned packs; Atlas when you want a small public catalog plus a mobile import path. Pick for the job, not for a trophy ranking.

Can I use character cards on iPhone / Android?
Yes, if you use an app or flow that accepts Tavern cards. With AIME, import the PNG through Character Atlas, then open AIME on iOS 15+ or Android with the same account. Exact in-app taps after a private import can vary; follow the live app and the import guide.

How do I import a card into AIME?
Use Atlas Card studio, upload a Tavern PNG (chara / ccv3), sign in when asked, review parsed fields, and save. Step-by-step: How to Import a SillyTavern / Tavern Character Card into AIME.

Are downloads safe?
Card files are typically images plus embedded text data, not programs. Stick to known sources, use age / tag filters, and do not install random “unlock” software a download page pushes at you. Hosted chat sites store conversations on their servers — that is a separate privacy choice from the card file itself.

Do I need SillyTavern to use a card?
No. SillyTavern is one front-end. Hosted card platforms and apps with import support (including AIME via Atlas) can run a compatible card without a local SillyTavern install.

Honest boundaries

  • We name public sources as starting points. We do not claim verified download volumes, “tens of thousands” library sizes, or search-demand numbers from other blogs.
  • Atlas’s public catalog is still small (149 characters on the home copy as of 2026-10-25). Browse it with that expectation; count can change — check characters.365aime.com.
  • AIME is free to download; AIME Premium is optional monthly or yearly. Prices are shown in the store at purchase.
  • Characters and replies are fictional AI. They do not replace professional medical, legal, financial, or mental health advice.
  • If you are still comparing Character.AI-style apps more broadly (memory, voice, group chat, cards), see Best Character.AI Alternatives in 2026.

Next step

  1. Browse a source that fits your filters, or start with public cards on Character Atlas.
  2. When you have a Tavern PNG you have rights to use, follow Import into AIME.
  3. Download AIME for iPhone / Android with the same account and keep the conversation going.
