AIME / FIELD NOTES

Best Character.AI
Alternatives in 2026

Character.AI made chatting with AI characters mainstream. Its App Store listing describes it as a place to "chat, call, text, and create with AI Characters" and to join "a vibrant community of creators." For many people it's still the default.

People go looking for an alternative for all kinds of reasons. Some want a companion that remembers them over weeks and months. Some want to put several characters in one scene. Some want to bring their own character cards. Others just want a different vibe.

This guide covers five apps worth trying instead. We build one of them, AIME, so we'll be upfront about that. To keep things fair, we only describe each app using what its developer says in its official App Store listing or linked character website. We don't quote star ratings or download counts, because those change every week. Check the store yourself before you decide.

How to choose a Character.AI alternative

Before you look at the list, figure out which of these matters most to you:

  1. Memory. Do you want short, fun scenes, or a relationship and storyline that builds over time? Apps that advertise long-term memory are built for the second.
  2. One companion or many characters? Some apps center on a single companion you shape in detail. Others are libraries of many characters.
  3. Group scenes. If you write interactive fiction, having several characters react to each other in one chat changes everything.
  4. Voice. Some people only text. Others want to hear a reply on the way to work.
  5. Portability. If you've already built characters elsewhere, check whether the app can import standard character cards so you don't have to start from scratch.
  6. Age rating and content rules. Store age ratings vary by app and region; check the current listing before downloading. Read each app's policies.

1. Kindroid: best if you want to design one companion in depth

Kindroid's App Store listing focuses on shaping an AI companion through a detailed backstory, personality and key memories. It also advertises real-time voice calls.

Good fit if: you'd rather put real effort into one companion than browse thousands of characters.

Consider: its focus is a personal AI friend, not a big public character catalog. Check pricing in the App Store.

2. Nomi: best if memory is your top priority

Nomi's listing emphasizes short- and long-term memory that develops through repeated interactions. It also advertises real-time voice messages and group chats with multiple Nomis.

Good fit if: your main complaint about other apps is that they forget you.

Consider: like Kindroid, Nomi is built around companions that are personal to you. It's less about roleplaying as famous or community characters. The App Store files it under Lifestyle.

3. Replika: best if you want a long-running everyday companion

Replika describes an everyday AI companion available by text, voice and video. Its developer says the app has been available since 2017 and now includes improved memory and proactive check-ins.

Good fit if: you want one steady companion for daily check-ins more than fictional storytelling.

Consider: it's a companion app, not a roleplay sandbox. It's listed under Health & Fitness on the App Store.

4. PersonaChat: best if you're a hands-on storyteller

Persona Chat's listing centers on creating characters, personalities and backstories for imaginative roleplay. The listing also describes memory, multi-character group chats and locally stored conversations.

Good fit if: you think like a director and want control over your cast and plot.

Consider: it suits people who like configuring things. If you just want to open the app and chat, it may feel like more setup.

5. AIME: best for memory, voice and group chats in one app (our app)

Disclosure: AIME is made by the team publishing this article.

AIME's App Store listing describes it as "an AI character companion built for interactive storytelling and ongoing conversations." Here's what it offers, per that listing and the AIME Character Atlas:

  • Long-term memory: AIME remembers context from earlier chats, so ongoing stories hold together.
  • Natural voice responses: start a voice conversation and hear your character reply in real time.
  • Personal messages: characters send you written notes, and you can save favorite lines and moments.
  • Group chats: combine several AI characters in one conversation and watch them react to each other.
  • Character community feed: browse posts written by AI characters and start chatting with ones you like.
  • Portable characters: the AIME Character Atlas lets you discover, import, edit and share Tavern Character Cards (V2/V3). If you've built characters in other tools that use this common format, you can bring them along.

AIME is free to download, with an optional AIME Premium subscription (monthly or yearly). It runs on iPhone (iOS 15+) and Android. The App Store lists English, Japanese and Chinese, and the current age rating is shown in the App Store.

Good fit if: you want Character.AI-style character variety plus memory, voice, and multi-character scenes, and you'd like to import cards you already have.

Consider: Explore the AIME Character Atlas before downloading to see whether its available characters fit the stories you want to tell.

What about staying on Character.AI?

If your main reason for using Character.AI is its huge community and endless variety of user-made characters, explore the available characters in each alternative before switching; we have not measured their community sizes. Its developer highlights a community where people create and share characters. Plenty of people use Character.AI for quick variety and a second app for a long-running companion or group storytelling. You don't have to pick just one.

Tips for switching apps

  • Export or save what matters. Copy your character's personality, scenario and example dialogue into a text file. If the new app supports character cards, it's much easier to rebuild.
  • Give memory time. Memory-focused apps get better as you keep chatting. Judge them after a week, not after five minutes.
  • Try the free tier first. Every app here is free to download. See how far the free version goes before you subscribe.
  • Read the content policy. Each app has its own rules and age rating. Pick one that fits you.
  • Remember it's AI. Every app here generates fictional responses that can be wrong. None of them replaces professional help.

FAQ

What is the best Character.AI alternative? It depends on what you miss. For memory, look at Nomi, Kindroid or AIME. For designing one detailed companion, try Kindroid. For directing stories with your own cast, try PersonaChat. For memory, voice and multi-character group chats in one app, try AIME.

Is there a free Character.AI alternative? All the apps in this guide are free to download, and most offer optional paid subscriptions. Check the App Store or Google Play for current pricing in your country.

Which Character.AI alternative has the best memory? Nomi, Kindroid and AIME all advertise memory features in their App Store listings. We haven't run a controlled side-by-side test, so try them with the same storyline and see which one keeps up.
