AIME / FIELD NOTES
AIME vs Character.AI: An Honest Head-to-Head (2026)
If you already live in Character.AI and wonder whether AIME is worth a second install, you want a pairwise comparison — not another ten-app list. That list still exists: Best Character.AI alternatives in 2026. This page is narrower: AIME vs Character.AI only.
We build AIME and the AIME Character Atlas. That is a conflict of interest. We still try to be factual: cite public pages, date our checks, and say where Character.AI clearly wins (scale of the public character library) and where AIME is aiming (memory + voice + group chat + portable Tavern cards on a phone). Checked 2026-10-26 (Asia/Shanghai).
One-line fit
| You might prefer… | If you care most about… |
|---|---|
| Character.AI | A very large public character library and a familiar web/app ecosystem you already use |
| AIME | Long-term memory + voice + multi-character group chat + Tavern V2/V3 card import/publish via Atlas, with EN/JA/ZH listed on our FAQ |
Many people keep both while they decide. AIME is free to download; Premium is optional and priced in the store — we do not hard-code amounts.
Snapshot comparison
| Dimension | Character.AI (public posture) | AIME (public posture) |
|---|---|---|
| Library scale | Large community character catalog (category reputation; we do not invent user or bot counts) | Public Atlas catalog still small on purpose — browse characters.365aime.com |
| Memory | Check Character.AI’s current product pages for memory controls and plan limits | Homepage/FAQ: long-term memory keeps context across chats |
| Voice | Voice features are part of the mainstream C.AI product story | Homepage: natural voice responses / real-time voice conversation |
| Group / multi-character | C.AI culture includes many public characters; multi-party UX differs by product surface — check current App | Homepage/FAQ: group chats combine several AI characters in one conversation |
| Portable cards | Not Tavern-native; official data export ≠ importable Tavern PNG (export guide) | Atlas: import/edit/share Tavern Character Cards V2/V3 PNG (chara / ccv3) |
| Languages (AIME FAQ) | Broad localization historically; confirm store listing for your region | FAQ: App Store lists English, Japanese, and Chinese |
| Age / framing | Follow Character.AI’s live store rating & safety policies | Check the live store listing in your country for AIME’s current rating |
| Business status (Oct 2026) | Official blog: voluntary Chapter 11 sale process; platform still up; sale expected ~end Nov / early Dec 2026; wind-down if no suitable bid | Independent product; download via App Store / Play / APK |
Deeper notes
Character library vs portable cards
Character.AI’s advantage is breadth of ready-made characters. AIME will not pretend otherwise. AIME’s bet is portability: if you (or creators you follow) already use SillyTavern-style character cards, Atlas is built to import and optionally publish them, then continue in the mobile App. See Atlas explainer and import guide.
If you need to leave Character.AI with something reusable, official export is account/chat oriented and slow — not a Tavern card. Details: Export Character.AI data vs character cards.
Memory and continuity
People leave C.AI threads when the bot “forgets.” AIME markets long-term memory on the homepage. That is a claim to test yourself over several days — not a lab ranking. Framework: AI chat long-term memory.
Voice and group chat
Both products talk about richer-than-text chat. AIME explicitly lists voice and multi-character group chats on https://365aime.com. For how we describe group scenes without inventing UI chrome, see AI group chat characters. Confirm Character.AI’s current voice/group controls in their App — we will not reconstruct menus from memory.
Filters, safety, and age
Do not use rumor threads as a filter encyclopedia. Character.AI publishes its own safety and content rules; AIME is framed for a store-safe companion audience on our side. Age ratings change — open each store listing in your country.
Chapter 11 context (Character.AI)
On October 12, 2026, Character.AI published An Update on Character.ai: voluntary Chapter 11 to run a court-supervised sale; platform remains up; sale expected by end of November or early December 2026; if no bid supports continued operations, the platform will be wound down. That is not the same as “already shut down.” Watch their blog for changes. Practical backup steps: our export / card guide.
Who should try AIME first?
- You want memory + voice + group scenes in one mobile companion.
- You already have (or want) Tavern PNGs and dislike rebuilding characters.
- You want Japanese or Chinese UI language options listed alongside English (per our FAQ / store notes).
- You accept a smaller public catalog while you build your own cast.
Who should stay on Character.AI (for now)?
- Your entire social graph of bots lives there and you mainly browse huge public lists.
- You are mid-thread on C.AI and only need stability during the sale window — still request exports early if you care about backups.
- You have not tried AIME’s install path yet and only needed a roundup — start with #1 alternatives then return here.
Switching without drama
You do not have to delete Character.AI to try AIME. A practical sequence:
- Keep your C.AI account; request an official data export early if the sale timeline worries you (export guide).
- Install AIME from official links only (install guide).
- Recreate one important character as a Tavern PNG (or import an existing card) and chat for a few days with a continuity test.
- Optionally publish to Atlas if you want others to find that card (publish guide).
- Only then decide whether AIME replaces a daily habit or stays a side App.
Panic-migrating every bot in one evening usually produces weak cards. Prioritize the relationships you actually reopen.
What we are not claiming
- That AIME already matches Character.AI’s catalog size.
- That AIME “wins” every blind memory test — test your own threads.
- That Character.AI is offline today.
- Hard-coded subscription prices for either product.
- Endorsement of unofficial C.AI scraping extensions (see export guide caveats).
FAQ
Is AIME a Character.AI clone?
No. Overlap exists (AI characters, chat). AIME emphasizes memory, voice, group chat, and Tavern card workflows via Atlas rather than matching C.AI’s library scale.
Is Character.AI shutting down today?
No, per their October 2026 update — the service remains up during the sale. Wind-down is conditional on the sale outcome. Read their official blog.
Can I import my Character.AI bots into AIME with one click?
Not via the official export zip. Rebuild or adapt into a Tavern PNG, then import. See the export guide and import guide.
Which is cheaper?
AIME: free to download, optional Premium — store prices win. Character.AI: follow their live subscription pages. We do not paste dollar amounts that go stale.
Where do I install AIME?
